Formed in 2016 under the direction of award winning, performing percussionist John Marshall, the Aspetuck Frame Drummers include Diane Kinkade, Karen Hotchkiss, Andrew Pyle and John Marshall. Their original compositions are performed chiefly on large, single headed hoop /frame drums that utilize finger dexterity rather than sticks or mallets. Their material is inspired by classical and folkloric musical traditions from Egypt, the pan -Arabic rhythmic library, both ancient and modern, North Africa, Central Asia and Western Europe. Featured instruments are, the riq, daff, bendir, bodhran and assorted frame drums of all shapes, sizes and timbre.
Having appeared before numerous audiences in North East America, their music can be described as dazzling, original , educational and fascinating to both watch and hear.
The Aspetuck Frame Drummers publish their fully notated compositions with Honey Rock Publications, and their newest piece, TAPER, for Frame Drum Quartet, features an exciting arrangement of traditional Egyptian folk rhythms, to be released in the spring of 2024. Their recorded music and videos can be found on YouTube and all popular platforms.
